A Guide to Warframe's Kuva Liches
How to kill and get a weapon from them
After completing the quest 'The War Within' and acquiring a Railjack, Tenno will start to encounter Kuva Larvling in Grineer mission nodes. Upon killing the Larvling, a Kuva Lich will arise in the Origin System. Warframe account holders have to deal with them grabbing a portion of their mission rewards until they're defeated. Here's how to defeat one.
Kuva Larvlings and the Progenitor Warframe
Kuva Larvlings, as mentioned, appear in Grineer mission nodes. To expand on that, it has to be level 20+ and not these kinds of missions:
- Dark Sectors
- Invasion
- Quests
- Sorties
- Void Fissures The lights will flash yellow if the node can spawn a Kuva Larvling. Like generating a Juggernaut, you have one minute to kill enough enemies to force one to be created. When successful, a transmission from a Kuva Guardian will notify you, and a new waypoint to the Larvling will be made. Kill it with a Parazon Mercy kill, triggering a Kuva Lich's creation.
Only the last player to hit the Larvling in a party will be able to mercy kill it. If no one takes the opportunity, the Larvling will despawn. Hunting the Larvling will not interfere with your mission. If you killed it, whether you completed or aborted it, the Kuva Lich will contact you. You cannot kill the Larvling if you already have a Kuva Lich or Sisters of Parvos activated.
The Warframe you're using will become the Progenitor Warframe. It influences the weapon's element and the Lich's ephemera. The Warframe also decides Kuva Lich's abilities. The variation doesn't matter. It will provide the same element as its base form.
Going near the Larvling will show you the icon and name of the Kuva Weapon the Kuva Lich will use. You can keep respawning them, and whatever you passed up on won't reappear. On the downside, you can reach the end of the pool, but it only cycles back again.
Enraging the Kuva Lich
Once spawned, the Kuva Lich will take over a planet and some mission nodes. These will generate Kuva Thralls. Defeating them will clear the Lich's influence over the location. Their defeat reveals the correct Requiem Mods to remove their master's immortality (to be explained in depth later). Doing influenced missions penalizes your rewards, the Kuva Lich taking them until you entirely defeat them. They can take Blueprints, Credits, Resources, Ayatan Treasures, Kuva, Void Relics, and Mods. However, they don't take Requiem Mods and Relics or Pigments. The tax they take increases the more nodes they have an influence on. When you use a Parazon finisher on your Lich (with the wrong mod), or you've cleared their influence on a planet, it ranks up and moves to another one. Killing their thralls will enrage them, making them likelier to encounter in influenced missions. This, in turn, makes it easier for you to rank them up for defeat. Once you've sufficiently leveled the Kuva Lich up, they'll move to a Railjack confrontation node. Use your Railjack to confront and defeat them once and for all. Otherwise, they'll keep taxing you when you do missions on Saturn.
Requiem Mods and Murmur
To remove the Kuva Lich's immortality, you must figure out the correct order of Requiem Mods and/or gather them up. You can get them from Requiem Relics or through trading. However, be wary of cheaper offers as most likely they are out of charge ('Defiled') and are only helpful for Transmutation or selling. Available mods would likely cost Warframe Platinum or an excessive amount of Credits. There are 9 types:
- Fass
- Jahu
- Khra
- Lohk
- Netra
- Ris
- Vome
- Xata
- Oull Oull acts as a wildcard and can replace another Requiem Mod. Each one has three' charges.' Using them up will make them 'Defiled' and unusable to strip a Kuva Lich of their mortality. Murmurs will reveal the needed mods, and you get them by defeating Thralls. Note that these only reveal which ones you need but not the order. When you've figured that out, you can attempt to kill the Kuva Lich before they're strong enough to move to a Railjack mission. This has pros and cons.
When and How to Kill the Kuva Lich
Killing the Lich earlier will make it easier for you to defeat them. Leveling them up will increase their attributes or resistance and teach them more abilities to use against you. Higher levels don't affect the rewards, so it's just to make things more challenging. However, you still have to find out which mods you need, so you'll collect murmurs for a while. If you fail to guess, they'll level up, too, so it's best to know at least two before trying to think of the last one. As mentioned, the Kuva Lich is more likely to appear in influenced nodes the more enraged they are. Like any other boss, you can battle them until they're down. With their immortality, though, they despawn if you use the wrong Requiem Mod, swearing vengeance against you. Otherwise, the fight continues, and you can try another mod. If you do it three times, you can defeat them to get the Kuva weapon and ephemera. The alternative is letting them live to fight alongside you in some missions. Either way, you'll get some help in future quests, whether through a new gun or a companion.
Available Kuva Weapons
All are prefixed with 'Kuva,' and their energy coloration depends on the Progenitor Warframe.
- Drakgoon
- Hind
- Karak
- Kohm
- Ogris
- Quartakk
- Tonkor
- Brakk
- Kraken
- Nukor
- Seer
- Twin Stubbas
- Hek
- Grattler
- Zarr
- Bramma (bow)
- Chakkhurr (rifle)
- Shildeg (hammer)
- Ayanga (grenade launcher Arch-gun)
The last four are unique to Kuva Liches and are not based on any pre-existing Grineer weapon. Each Kuva variant will only award Mastery Points once. Even if you receive the gun again from another Lich, it will no longer give you MP. If you know what the weapon looks like, you can choose which one to get before stabbing a Kuva Larvling to start the hunt. Also, use the Warframe that will give you the desired element. See the chart above for reference.
Valence Fusion
It's the process of fusing two weapons of the same kind (ex. 2 Kuva Hinds). This increases the Elemental Bonus on the firearm but includes some critical mechanics. First, other upgrades you've put into the weapon (Orokin Catalyst, Forma of any kind, Exilus Weapon Adapter, etc.) will disappear if you fuse it to another. To keep those, you must combine the other gun with it instead of vice versa. For example, to keep (A), equip it, and choose to fuse (B) to it. Doing the reverse will cost you the upgrades done to (A). Second, there's a maximum limit to the Elemental Bonus the weapon can get. That's 60%; depending on the initial value, it can take a few fusions to reach that percentage. Third, you can choose which element to keep if your sacrificial weapon uses a different one. The bonus will remain; only the element changes.
Hunt Those Kuva Liches
To summarize:
- Kill a Kuva Larvling (make sure to use a Warframe that will give you the element you want)
- Gather Requiem Mods and/or Murmurs to figure out which ones to use
- Fight your Kuva Lich (use the correct Requiem Mods)
- Get a weapon or an ally! The Kuva variant of the weapons listed above has some unique quirks that don't exist in the standard variants. These also bypass the MR rank needed to equip the regular versions. This is certainly one way to get to use those weapons in advance.
